Children and Fire Safety

Simple steps today can protect your children for a lifetime

Parents and guardians play a vital role in protecting children from fire. These tips can help you prevent fires and prepare your family to respond safely if one occurs.

Fire Prevention at Home

Store matches and lighters safely — out of sight and out of reach.

Never leave cooking unattended. Turn pot handles inward and keep hot items away from kids.

Keep flammable materials (like cleaners, fuels, and aerosol cans) locked away.

Use childproof outlet covers and secure cords to avoid tripping and electrical hazards.

Be cautious with space heaters. Keep them at least 3 feet from anything that can burn.

Avoid smoking indoors, and never leave lit candles unattended.

Install and Maintain Smoke Alarms

Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home.

Test alarms monthly.

Replace batteries once a year.

Replace the alarms themselves every 10 years.

Make and Practice a Fire Escape Plan

Create a family escape plan with two ways out of every room.

Practice home fire drills twice a year, including one at night.

Teach children:

“Get low and go” under smoke.

“Stop, drop, and roll” if their clothes catch fire.

Never hide during a fire — go outside and stay out.

Choose a safe meeting place outside the home where everyone knows to go.

Teach Emergency Skills

Show children how to call 911 and explain what to say.

Make sure they know their full name, address, and phone number.

Be a Role Model for Fire Safety

Never leave children alone around flames, candles, or hot appliances.

Teach children how to use appliances safely when they’re old enough.

Child-Specific Tips

Use flame-resistant sleepwear for young children.

Keep fireplace tools, hot irons, and hair appliances out of reach.

Educate children in a calm, non-scary way to build confidence and awareness.
