Steve Giarusso

If you’ve been around here long enough, you know for the last 48 years Steve’s been part of just about every version of this department.
Different rigs. Different buildings. Different generations of firefighters.
He stepped into leadership when it mattered. Made decisions when they weren’t easy. And helped guide this department through times that shaped what we are today.
But what says the most about Steve… is actually what happened with this very moment tonight.
Because when we talked about honoring him—he didn’t want it.
He wanted to pass this recognition to someone younger. Someone active. Someone still in the middle of it.
That tells you everything you need to know about the kind of person he is.
No ego. No need for the spotlight.
Just pride in the next generation… and in seeing the department continue to move forward.
No department gets to where we are without people like Steve.
Because long before a lot of us walked through those doors… guys like him were already putting in the work, setting the tone, and building the standard.
Steve isn’t even here tonight.
Not because he didn’t want to be… but because he’s doing what a lot of us hope to do someday—enjoying retirement.
From what I hear, this is just one of many trips… and I’m not exactly sure if he’s in Florida or Hawaii this week—but either way, I think he’s doing just fine.
We’ll make sure Steve gets the recognition he deserves when he returns.
