A Perfect Fall Day for Fun and Fire Safety in Minoa

On Sunday, October 19, 2025 the Minoa community gathered in Lewis Park for a day filled with fun, friendship, and fire safety. Under bright blue skies and warm fall sunshine, families came out for Trunk or Treat and the Minoa Fire Department’s Open House, which this year focused on recruiting new volunteers.

Dozens of children arrived in costume — Spiderman, princesses, unicorns, dinosaurs, and, fittingly, quite a few miniature firefighters. Smiles were everywhere as at least a hundred pounds of Halloween candy found its way into eager trick-or-treat bags. The Fire Department’s ladder truck was a favorite stop, thanks to a particularly generous member of the Fire Department with a sweet tooth for giving. Everyone could stop by the K-9 vehicles of the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office to see the dogs and talk with the deputies who are the dogs’ expert handlers.

A highlight of the day was a live vehicle extrication demonstration by Minoa’s expertly trained firefighters. Using hydraulic cutters and spreaders — often known by the brand name “Jaws of Life” — as well as saws and stabilization equipment, the crew showed how they would safely remove trapped occupants after a serious crash. Before a crowd of onlookers, they stabilized the car, cut off the doors, and peeled back the roof with skill and precision. The demonstration gave everyone a new appreciation for the training, teamwork, and courage that go into every rescue.

Alongside the action, the Fire Department served up free hot dogs, drinks, and plenty of giveaways. Kids and adults alike went home with toy fire helmets, first aid kits, and fire-safety coloring books.

The day wasn’t just about fun — it was about community. The Minoa Fire Department achieved its goal of spreading the message of fire safety and encouraging residents to consider joining as volunteers.

When the ceremonies wound down, one thing was clear: it had been a good time for everyone, and an even better day for Minoa.
