Celebrate Safely: A Guide to Enjoying Fireworks

Enjoy the show with care
Fireworks can add sparkle to holidays and special events, creating moments of joy for families and communities. But with their beauty comes a need for caution. Each year, thousands of people, including many children, are injured while using fireworks. The good news? Most of these injuries are preventable with just a few simple steps.
Leave It to the Pros
The safest—and often most spectacular—way to enjoy fireworks is by attending a professional display. These events are carefully planned and operated by licensed pyrotechnicians who know how to keep everyone safe. Plus, you’ll enjoy larger, more colorful shows than anything you can do at home.
If You Light Them, Do It Right
If you choose to use legal consumer fireworks, such as sparkling devices, be sure to follow these safety basics:
- Adults only. Fireworks should be handled only by those 18 and older. This includes sparklers, which can burn at temperatures of 2,000°F.
- Use outdoors in open spaces. Choose a safe, clear area away from homes, trees, and anything flammable.
- Keep water nearby. Have a hose or bucket ready for emergencies or for soaking used items.
- Light one at a time. Step back quickly and never try to relight a firework that didn’t go off.
- Don’t aim or throw. Even small fireworks can cause serious injury if misused.
- Protect pets. Loud noises and flashing lights can upset animals. Keep them safely indoors.
Clean Up Carefully
Once the fun is over, clean up any used fireworks or debris. Soak them in water before disposing of them in a metal trash can to reduce fire risk and keep the area tidy.
Be a Good Neighbor
Be mindful of others when setting off fireworks. Fireworks can disturb pets, babies, older adults, and those with PTSD or sensory sensitivities. Limit your celebrations to reasonable hours, and always prioritize courtesy.
Know the Law
Age Restrictions
In New York State, including Onondaga County, only adults age 18 and over may buy, use, or possess permitted sparkling devices like sparklers and fountains. It is illegal to provide any fireworks—even legal sparkling devices—to anyone under 18. Children may not hold or light them.
Violating this rule is considered a criminal offense under state law.
Onondaga County Rules
Onondaga County follows New York’s statewide fireworks laws. Sparkling devices may be purchased and used only during two approved periods each year:
- June 1 – July 5
- December 26 – January 2.
Sales must be through certified retailers. Other types of fireworks, including explosive or aerial varieties, remain illegal for consumer use. These include:
- Firecrackers
- Bottle rockets
- Aerials
- Roman candles
- Any fireworks that launch or explode.
Special Rules for Syracuse
If you plan a public fireworks display within the City of Syracuse, even using sparkling devices, you must obtain a permit from the Syracuse Fire Department. The permit process includes:
- At least 15 days’ advance notice
- Proof of a licensed pyrotechnician (age 21+)
- A $25 fee
- $2 million in liability insurance
- Compliance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
Celebrate Smart
Fireworks can be a safe and joyful part of summer celebrations. By knowing the rules, using common sense, and showing care for others, you help ensure a fun and incident-free holiday for everyone.
